Location without invented precision

How named places, broad areas, and supported coordinates become useful geographic context.

The important distinction

A source naming an area does not establish a street address. The map should communicate the precision of the evidence.

Ground the place in the source

Place extraction starts with names in the original report and their relationship to WOUT’s geographic reference data. A model cannot provide a made-up coordinate to make a story look mappable.

Geographic matching also affects clustering. Reports from compatible areas may describe one event; reports from different known streets should not be combined without stronger evidence.

Show the level of detail

The product distinguishes supported points from named places and broader geographic descriptions. Public analysis here uses place labels and precision categories; it does not publish people’s private location-sharing data.

Exact / approximate
A source-supported point can be eligible for a map pin; approximate positions still require a precision label.
Named place / area
Describe or frame the area rather than imply a precise incident address.
Unknown
Leave location unresolved instead of manufacturing a point.

Coverage is a property of the feed

An area with no current WOUT signals is an area with no current signals in this dataset. It is not evidence that nothing is happening there, or that travel is safe.

The live analysis counts areas represented in its returned public sample. It does not claim national coverage, exhaustive reporting, or a measured incident rate.

Methodology note

Based on the WOUT implementation reviewed October 11, 2026. Rules and product availability can change. Examples are explanatory; current records appear in the public analysis.
